ROBERT M. GATES is Chancellor of the College of William & Mary. He served as U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2006 to 2011 and as Director of Central Intelligence from 1991 to 1993. Before becoming Secretary of Defense, Gates was the President of Texas A&M University. He joined the CIA in 1966 and worked for nearly three decades as an intelligence professional.
