LISA ANDERSON is James T. Shotwell Professor Emerita of International Relations at Columbia University. She served as Provost and later as President of the American University of Cairo and was Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. She is the author of The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya, 1830–1980 and Pursuing Truth, Exercising Power: Social Science and Public Policy in the Twenty-First Century. She is the regular reviewer of works on the Middle East for the Recent Books section of Foreign Affairs.
