BARRY EICHENGREEN is George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Chair and Distinguished Professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. A Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a regular columnist at Project Syndicate, he is the author of In Defense of Public Debt, among other books. He is the regular reviewer of works on economics for the Recent Books section of Foreign Affairs.
