The former New York Times London correspondent and his wife collaborate on a sketch of life in postwar Britain, the former wrestling with politics and economics, the latter shuddering slightly over queues and gray austerity. The general effect is one of fair-minded sympathy mingled with apprehension for the future and some nostalgia for the past.
